In the process of dealing with some plug-in conflict issues, I had to restore my site from a backup. Now, all of the coding I put into the child functions.php file have disappeared and I can no longer update that file. (I get a security warning and the update stops.)

    Now what?

    Hey awjensen,

I’m guessing that the backup you restored didn’t contain the code which was in your child theme? What exactly are you trying to add to functions.php?

    Best regards,

It doesn’t matter what I am trying to add. I restored an even earlier version of my web site and the coding reappeared. When I click the update file button on the functions.php page, I get the following error message.

Unable to communicate back with site to check for fatal errors, so the PHP change was reverted. You will need to upload your PHP file change by some other means, such as by using SFTP.

    Hi,

It seems you are experiencing the same issue as this jetpack users: https://github.com/Automattic/pinghub/issues/8#issuecomment-361821044
    The solution stated there was:

For those who have a Jetpack plugin installed on WordPress:
Eventually I can resolve the problem by reactivating (deactivate, then activate again) the Jetpack plugin. The error mentioned is gone now.

Let us know if this helps.

    Hi awjensen,

This is not theme related, this is due to your server configuration. You can edit the file via FTP.

    Best regards,
    Victoria
