I’ve been battling an issue for almost a year with my webhost (LiquidWeb). Since we migrated to a new server, we’ve been experiencing several intermittent issues:
    1) Images and Gravity Forms don’t load
    2) Unformatted HTML is displayed
    3) Extremely slow page loads (more than 30 seconds)
    4) Page Timeouts
The host is insisting that this is a theme issue. They disabled Enfold and enabled one of the WordPress default themes and the issue goes away. However, we didn’t have this issue on our old server and the only site that I manage that doesn’t have this issue is hosted by a different company.
Additionally, the issue manifests after a few page loads from the same IP address, which makes me think it’s a process limit issue. If I use a VPN to change my IP, the first few pages load, but then we start seeing the same issues again. We’re getting emails daily from users who can’t get the pages or forms to load so this is now impacting our revenue.
The host is asking if you have any recommendations for configuration settings. Or any ideas how to solve this issue.
Here are 2 of the websites with the issues: https://liveabroadnow.com/ and https://ameliaandjp.com/

    Hey jstonestreet,

    Thank you for the inquiry.

Do they have additional information regarding the issue, or what is in the theme that is slowing the site? Default themes will surely load faster compare to themes like Enfold because they are pretty light and do not offer the same functionality and features, which also means that they do not have to load as many resources (scripts, stylesheets etc).

We checked the site and right off the bat, 404 errors popped up, missing files from the theme, WP core and gravity forms. The errors randomly occur on different pages.

Have you tried disabling the plugins temporarily (cache, minification)? There are a total of 20 plugins installed in the site right now, which is quite a lot, so one of them or a combination of those plugins plus the theme may be causing the issue.

    Best regards,
    Ismael

They continue to blame the theme (Enfold), but since we don’t have this issue on the only site I manage that’s hosted at a different company, it can’t possibly be the theme. We’re seeing it on 17 websites I manage that are hosted on the same server. Also, we didn’t have this issue on my old, outdated server; just the new one.

I tried disabling every plugin, but still see the issue. I don’t have a caching or minification plugin installed. I also have the file compression and merging disabled on the theme for both CSS and Javascript.

I asked the host to install the website on a different server with a clean install to see if it happens there. Am I correct in assuming that you haven’t seen this issue with any other customer websites?
    Thanks

    Hi,

    Thank you for the info.

In the Enfold > Performance panel, try to enable the Delete old CSS and JS files? option, located at the very bottom of the panel and set the Remove query string from static resources to the second option to properly remove cached resources if there are any, and force them to reload.

We may need to access the dashboard and the file server via FTP in order to debug the issue further. Please post the login details in the private field. It would also be a lot safer if we could access a staging or development version of the site.

    Best regards,
    Ismael

I tried the “delete old css and js files” and “remove querystrings” options but those didn’t work. Still no images and I even saw unformatted HTML on one page load, which has also been happening occasionally.
I reactivated the required plugins and put the performance settings back to the way they were.
The login details are in the private content. Your help solving this is greatly appreciated. The web host is insisting it’s a theme issue and can’t think outside the box to figure out what server settings are causing it.
    Thanks!

    Hi,

Thank you for the info. We tried to access the test site using the address above but it does not exist. Would you mind asking your hosting provider to generate an FTP account for the server?

    Best regards,
    Ismael

    Hi,

    Thank you for the update.

We can now view the site but we cannot access the dashboard using the previous WP account above. Did you change it? We also tried to access the file server but it seems to be restricted to a blank directory, which does not contain the staging site. Please make sure that the FTP account above has the correct permission to access the root directory of the staging site.

Is there any way that we can access the site without editing our hosts file? We do not usually do it here and we would prefer if we do not have to edit our host file just to view a site.

    Best regards,
    Ismael

The webhost finally figured it out. Here is there response:

“I believe some apache modules that were part of the “Server Security Plus” package may have been the problem. I did remove the apache modules mod_suexec, mod_evasive, and mod_bw and installed mod_env. I then matched the PHP extensions on your new server with what is in place on the testing server.”

    Thanks!
