Hi,
When I activate the CDN in this plugin I am getting Chinese characters or blanks where icons should appear. Do I need to upload or enable a particular file in CDN for these to work?

Ok, thanks for the feedback. Could you try updating the theme to the latest version (4.0.5) to see if that helps please? http://kriesi.at/documentation/enfold/updating-your-theme-files/. If not, then please try clearing the cache from your caching plugin and leave it deactivated until you get the problem solved.
