I’m updating theme and then will also update WP from currently 4.0
I have 30-40 custom sidebars with with 100+ custom text widgets and menus etc.I just tried updating theme and that resulted in my widgets getting removed from all my custom sidebars.
Even when I tried switching back to older version of enfold the widgets did not reappear
So I had to do a complete site restore.
How can I go about updating without losing my sidebars and widgets?

Which version are you updating from? Did you rename the theme? If so then that is going to save your contents under a different name so your settings will be lost on upgrading.
Cheers!

October 2, 2015 at 7:37 am #512587Hey!
This is an issue with WP version 4.2, specifically the register_sidebar function which will now require an ID. Unfortunately, it breaks the theme’s custom widget areas. You might find the assigned widgets relocated in the Appearance > Widgets > Inactive Widgets section. And you have to assign it again to their respective widget areas which is a lot of work if you have 100+ widgets. Also, make sure NOT to use any special characters on custom widget area name. We are very sorry for the inconvenience.
Cheers!
IsmaelOctober 2, 2015 at 8:42 pm #513023Yes that will be a lot of work..but at least I’m mentally prepared now. So will the custom sidebars still be there after update just empty? and the individual pages will still retain which sidebar is assigned to the respective page?
Any other potential issues I should aware of upgrading from 3.0.2 and from 4.0 WP to latest wordpress?
Thanks!
October 5, 2015 at 5:04 am #513453Hi,
Yes, the custom sidebars should be there after updating and they should also still be there on pages. If you want to make sure you might want to clone your site and try doing the update locally or on a test site first to make sure you don’t get any unpleasant surprises.
As far as I know that is the only thing that will require any actions from your side.
Regards,
Rikard -
