Hello there,
i was looking for guidance as to use the grid row element. I am wanting it to look like this http://www.strongtoserve.org/ and collapse like this also when you shrink the screen size. With the above link i was able to have the image relatively small but with this setup i seem to need to have the picture really large or a gap appears below if there is a lot of text.
Long story short it seems very tricky to get this page right whereas on the link above i had no problems. the responsive aspect seems to work differently.
Just looking for help to set this page up in grid row format.

Do you mean add it to the designated CSS option field in your themes backend at: Theme Options->General Styling?
I did this and there was no change.

this page seems to be fine for me, because grid layout is working as expected, also on mobile. Can you show us a screenshot of the changes you want to achieve? you can use imgur or dropbox.
