    How can I totally deactivate a theme that a former customer refuses to pay for yet continues to contact GoDaddy to reinstall previous versions? This is an urgent matter.

    The precondition for your actions should of course be access to the website. Technically it may be easier to do this than to do it legally.
    Otherwise the penalties could be higher than the loss of your salary, because it is a difficult legal question.
    Here in Germany, for example, it is the case that a craftsman who has rendered his services but has not been paid for them is not entitled to remove these services (e.g. wall tiles, installed electrical cables etc.).
    I would strongly advise against deactivation.
    The web page shut down is like you indicate it clearly also not rightfully. If a backup of the older version exists – that would be a possibility to stay the site online but not to make your service available until then it will be paid.

    One learns from such disappointments to prepare better contracts and to demand interim invoices for partial services supplied.

    If he has no proof of purchase – you can delete the calculated Envato Personal Token Key ( from Enfold Options ) and better : on Envato create a new token

    I appreciate your response, the legalities are all with me. Where can I create a new token on Envato? Also, I purchased this theme through ThemeForest as I was directed to do the purchasing through that website. Am I still logging into Envato? And if so, can you guide me as to how to do this?

    I need to ensure that when he has GoDaddy use another back up of the theme that theme doesn’t work unless he speaks to me. I understand the legalities. In the US, the laws are different. I have a contract with him that if I’m no longer employed with him, he cannot use the theme. He’s violating our written contract. Instead of dealing with the court system, I would prefer to ensure the theme doesn’t work. It’s a much easier solution.

    The theme and child theme have never had an API key entered into this site, so if the theme gets restored via back up, if I add an API key to all of my other site, will this stop him from using the theme?

    Can someone please respond to me about how to utilize an API key to ensure no one uses my theme without my permission?

    (1) When I log in to WordPress, the API key section states “Your Themeforest API Key”, not Kriesi API key – If I create an API key on Kriesi, does it work the same, or do I need to create an API key in Themeforest?
    (2) Once an API key is created, how does it work for any theme that doesn’t have an API key entered through WordPress?
    (3) Are there specific instructions on how to create the API key? Can someone please forward to me?

    Pretty please with sugar on top, can someone please respond to me?

    Hi bonbuttercup,

    Well, if you created the API key and your customer does not have it, they will not be able to update the theme. Other than that we cannot really do anything. The good thing is that you have the ThemeForest account for yourself.

    If you have agreed this contractually, you can sue him for injunction.
    However, I would prefer to outsource the problem to Envato. Report that your “customer” is misusing the topic and is using copies of the topic elsewhere.

    This has happened to me before.
    What I used to do is NOT add the api code for updates until I have been paid.
    And now I make them pay for the theme up front. And even create a Themeforest account for them. That way I have no responsibility after the site is up if they decide to “Run Away”
    Most of the time they never know what the TF account is about.
