    Hi

    I’ve read multiple threads on this but still am a bit confused. I am using a chill theme and both parents and child themes have the option for ‘Update theme’ where one can enter the Themeforest username and API key to get automatic updates. My question is – should I enter the details in the parent theme or the child theme?

    Hey architchandra,

    You will want to enter the details in the parent theme, then you can just switch back to continue working on the child. Please remember to back-up before any and all updates.

    Thanks Jordan, but I have a follow-up question to that.

    In order to enter my Themeforest username and API key in the parent theme I will have to deactivate the child theme and activate the parent theme temporarily. Will that step remove all the changes I have made using the child theme? (I made most of the changes using the theme GUI panel – only a few using a custom style.css and functions.php)

    Hi,

    No your child theme will be safe and the updates will remain when you return to it. I am confident of this, but as a precaution I always recommend backing-up before all updates and theme switches.
