Hello, today I tried to update Enfold from version 2.4.5 to the latest version and got the below fatal error. Can you assist?

Fatal error: Can’t use function return value in write context in /home/lissares/public_html/wp-content/themes/enfold/config-gutenberg/class-avia-gutenberg.php on line 31

    Thank you very much!

    Hey Jason,

The version you are updating from is very old, a lot things has changed since that version. The safest way to update would be to do it on a staging version of the site first. If that is not possible then please try to completely remove the theme folder, then upload the new version.

    Best regards,
    Rikard

Hi Rikard, so I removed the enfold folder and uploaded the newest version of the theme, however no change, still getting the same fatal error:
Fatal error: Can’t use function return value in write context in /home/lissares/public_html/wp-content/themes/enfold/config-gutenberg/class-avia-gutenberg.php on line 31

Any other advice you can provide would be appreciated.

    Hi again Rikard,

So I uploaded a backup of the site, so it’s live again. What I’m looking at is a site where the AVIA page builder does not load any longer. What specific steps can I take now to update the theme? You mentioned before updating the theme on a staged version of the site. I can’t imagine I would get a different result than the fatal error I got last time on the live site. Is there a way to update the theme in stages, instead of straight from 2.4.5 to the latest version?
Thank you in advance for any additional advice you can offer.

    Hi Jason,

It’s very likely that you will get the same problem on the staging site yes, but then you can focus on finding and solving the problem without having to worry about your production site being down. It will also give us a chance to see the actual problem and to solve it in an environment where we don’t have to worry about destroying your live site.

    Best regards,
    Rikard
