Please state best practice when installing Enfold with Child Theme on a WP Multisite install…

If I want all the subsites to reflect the parent site 100%, am I able to install Enfold Parent theme, configure it, then install a child theme and activate the child network wide? OR, activate the Child theme per site and import settings?

Note: I am also using these plugins: Ubermenu & ShiftNav Pro

What is the best practice to manage all of these plugin installs if wanting them to all appear with the same configuration across the network.

Thanks for helping me bullet-proof in advance.

    Hi Julie!

You would need to configure each instance of the theme on your multisite. The child theme would reflect whatever changes are in it but it doesn’t automatically reflect a parent theme or any customization of the theme options without manual changes.

Hi Devin, Just to be sure, let me restate what I think you are saying…

    1) Install the parent theme on the network.
    2) Activate & configure the parent theme on each sub site separately (Do not network activate)
    3) Install the child theme on the network.
    4) Activate and configure the child theme on each sub site (Do not network activate)

    A. When making a change to the configuration of the theme, do this to the parent theme that has been activated / sub site.
    B. When customizing or overriding the parent, do this on each child theme that has been activated / sub site.

    Have I stated it correctly?

Also, when upgrading Enfold – do I upgrade both Parent and Child themes?

This is the kind of question that is actually very difficult for us to answer. There is no single right way as it depends entirely on what you are doing.

You can network activate the theme and then make separate child themes for each instance *if that is right for you. You could also network active the parent and child to be used by everything new site setup.

The theme in this case is a non-issue and its really more dependent on your usage of the multisite setup. If you are unsure on what is best practice I would recommend a short consultation with a WordPress developer to go over your specific use.

No matter what, you’ll setup the theme options for each site the theme is installed on.

Thanks for your insight Devin, I will indeed connect with a multi-site expert also familiar with using Child Themes. Please close this support ticket.
