Me again. I have another weird image-sizing type issue. On this page: http://dev.stefaniesomers.com/studio-stefanie-somers/
Check out the pages linked to the first two thumbnails (yes, I know this is a plug-in – that’s not the issue, but it’s easier to take you to the pages via this plug-in, it’s only configured as a linking mechanism)I built these pages as copies of each other i.e., I built the first one, (the waterfall looking earrings with all the teardrop shapes), copied it, built the red and fuschia earring page from that (http://dev.stefaniesomers.com/studio/mekayla-studio/), copied it, and built the third one. Here’s where things got weird.
The third page, named CARLYN (http://dev.stefaniesomers.com/studio/carlyn-studio-2/), I can’t get the danged image to size correctly – it wants to present landscape and cropped – but I haven’t changed a single setting! Have I missed something that IS different? Do I need a vacation?

Thank you for using Enfold.
Please edit the last page with the gallery then change the Gallery Big Preview Image Size and the Gallery Preview Image Size. Maybe it resets back to the default setting.

Thank you, but not quite sure what you’re telling me… All of the settings within the Gallery window are the same as they are on the pages that are appearing correctly. What is it that I’m changing or looking for?
Okay…. How does the “Force same size for all big preview images?” work? Is there documentation on this somewhere? Where does it draw its instructions from? I think this may be gumming me up… In the “Gallery Big Preview Image Size” drop-down, how is the size given? Width by height, or height by width? I think there’s a combo of all this that’s causing my problem.

Hi!
Try installing this plugin and then regenerating your images: http://wordpress.org/plugins/simple-image-sizes/
That way we have a baseline of what the images should be from your settings in case they were somehow modified in between the first two and the last page.
Image cropping with WordPress can be a bit tough to get comfortable with since it takes the images longest image and crops or shrinks it down based on that edge unless the thumbnail is set to hard crop to a specific size.

Yeah, that plug-in that seems to have helped! Can you clue me in on that “Force same size for all big preview images”? I’m going to be adding an enormous number of images, in the thousands, and I’d really like to understand how this works before I get too deep in and need to backtrack on myself. I hate surprises… Is there a doc somewhere, or what can I look up? I’m still new to WordPress, but I’m a fast learner.

Hey!
The “Force same size for all big preview images?” option will crop the images if the aspect ratio of the images vary. Eventually all images will have the same size and it doesn’t matter if an image is a “landscape” or “portrait” photo. The cropping is done with css only and won’t affect the source images (= images stored on your server). If you want to use the gallery with professional photos I recommend to deactivate the “Force same size for all big preview images” option because the cropped images may look strange.

Okay… so it sounds like it’s an algorithm that “learns” as the database grows? That actually makes sense. 99% of my images are all the exact same ratio, although some of them are different pixel dimensions (i.e., 860×1024 and 430×512) so I’m guessing it won’t affect me that much except for that rogue 1%? The varying pixel sizes _won’t_ have any effect, correct? Those two sizes would display identically? I have a lot of older content that I’m porting over from an old website that’s the smaller size, but my new content is the larger size. There are many pages where I have both size images on the same page. I haven’t seen a problem so far – they seem to be mostly behaving with each other (except of course for the one that started this thread) but I’m not that far into the content merger yet. Do you foresee any other issues down the road on this?

Actually, no, it’s not an algorithm. Forcing images to have the same size will only force the gallery to apply a width of 100% for gallery images. This is bad for images with small dimension specially when the gallery is full width. You still need to have images with the same ratio and dimension as much as possible if you want a much more consistent looking gallery along the way.
