    Hi guys
I’ve upgraded the PHP version on my hostgator shared hosting site (ourtour.co.uk) to 7.3, which killed the site.
After working with hostgator support we worked out one or more plug-ins were causing the issue. After removing Wordfence and Yoast SEO the site loaded again. I’m now trying to find an SEO plug-in which works with the site, but every time I activate any of these I get the white screen of death:
    Yoast SEO
    All in One SEO Pack
WordPress SEO Plugin – Rank Math
If I change the theme from Enfold to Twenty Twenty then the site loads with any one of these plug-ins activated, so the issue seems to be a conflict between Enfold and the SEO plug-in, which wasn’t an issue with PHP 5.4, but occurs with PHP 7.3.
Enfold is up-to-date, as is the core and all of my plug-ins (the following plug-ins are active):
    Advanced Ads
    Akismet Anti-Spam
    All In One WP Security
    Enhanced Text Widget
Featured Images in RSS for Mailchimp & Other Email
    GDPR Cookie Consent
    MC4WP: Mailchimp for WordPress
    VaultPress
    WP Mail SMTP
    WPFront Notification Bar
Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks, Jason

    Hey Jason,

We haven’t had any other users report anything like that, so it’s very likely something local to your site. I tried logging into your site but the details you posted are not working, please check and verify.

    Best regards,
    Rikard

    Hi Rikard
I figured it’s something specific to my site. It’s been up for some years with plenty of theme and plug-in changes over time, so there could be some fragment of code or some such left in place which is causing it to fail. I don’t know how to debug the problem though – any suggestions would be appreciated. The problem is really odd – the site was working fine yesterday with the SEO plug-in disabled, and then down again this morning forcing me to disable more plug-ins to get it back up.

I’ve reset the password on the support account I sent previously and checked that it’s working if you can give it another try?

    Many thanks, Jason

I’m not sure whether the problem is really something to do with my .htaccess file. The site loads with it set like this:
    AddHandler application/x-httpd-ea-php70 .php .php7 .phtml

But in cpanel the PHP version for the ourtour.co.uk domain is set to 7.3. If I change the .htaccess line to:
    AddHandler application/x-httpd-ea-php73 .php .php7 .phtml

The the site fails to load. I have no idea whether this is related to the theme, or if it’s something completely different. I’ve checked all the error logs I can find on the server and no log entries are being created when I either amend .htaccess or enable on of the various plug-ins which cause the critical error. I’m completely lost now.
    Cheers, Jason

    Hi Jason,

Thanks for the update. About the .htaccess file; I’m not sure if the code you are referring to is even needed? If you want us to have a look at it then please include FTP login details in private as well.

About your SEO plugin problem; I can’t see any SEO plugins installed on the site, so it’s difficult to test anything really. Could you copy the site to a staging area so that we can experiment a bit with it there maybe?

    Best regards,
    Rikard

    Hi Rikard
Thanks very much for the support fella – I tried commenting out the PHP-version-related lines from .htacess and it killed the site, so I had to put them back in.
Anyway, I don’t want to waste any more of your time. After spending a few hours removing and re-installing plug-ins, changing themes etc the site seemed stable with just a few core plug-ins so I gave up and backed off. This morning after seeing your reply I got brave and tried adding Yoast and Wordfence and the site’s stayed up. I’ve zero idea what fixed it, if it really is fixed, but please close this topic off mate. My best guess is something on Hostgator’s platform caused it, but no idea what.
    Cheers, Jay

    Hi Jay,

Great news, let’s hope that it stays working then. We’ll keep this thread open in case you should have any further problems related to this topic.

    Best regards,
    Rikard
