wondering how I can use the prettyphoto or lightbox js from the theme to create the same effect on some custom buttons / links on posts and pages?
is this feature available or does it require custom coding?

The theme uses prettyPhoto which has examples here: http://www.no-margin-for-errors.com/projects/prettyphoto-jquery-lightbox-clone/
Eg:
