Custom full width header – menu background color

I want to use a custom full width header, but when i add my header image as a backround and use some quick CSS (as suggested in other threads for removing the overhanging logo), the menu has only my header as a backround.
I would like to have a whiteish transparent background for the menu items. How can i do that when i have set a custom background image in the general styling area?
