    I have a page for which I accidentally left the comment box checked but no comment form was visible on the public facing website. Recently someone submitted a comment and I cannot figure how that could happen if no comment form was visible. I hope you can make sense of how this could have happened.

    Hey beverlystone,

    Thank you for the inquiry.

    Are you using the Advance Layout Builder (ALB) for your posts? If yes, then you have to manually insert the Comments element from the ALB in order to display the comments form.

    I think you are not understanding the issue. It was a page, not a post. I don’t want comments. A comment form wasn’t visible but somehow someone submitted a comment.

    KEY QUESTION: How could someone have submitted a comment when there is no visible comment form?

    Hi,
    I assume that the comment was clearly spam, which was probably created with a comment spam script that just tries known WordPress comment URLs randomly so it doesn’t matter if the form is visible or not, this is a WordPress loophole that is the reason they created Akismet and auto install it on every WordPress site.
    For example here is a price list for a spammer that will post 20k comments for $34:

    you can be sure that his software will do this in about 10 mins.
    If you don’t want any comments I recommend the plugin Disable Comments
    If you want to allow comments on some posts you should manually approve all comments with the setting at WordPress ▸ Settings ▸ Discussion ▸ Before a comment appears ▸ Comment must be manually approved

    That helps. I never knew how spammers did this.

    Oddly, it was a comment from a legitimate source. I think I will follow up with them.
