Hello all,
I did some minimal searching, but didn’t see anything pop out at me, so I figured I’d open up a dialogue on this topic…
From everything I’ve read, WP will be discontinuing support for their Classic Editor at the end of 2021, and I wanted to see if/how that will affect the option to use the classic editor feature in Enfold.
I’m guessing I’m not the only one who despises Guttenburg/Block Editing, and was curious if there were plans for the Classic Editor to still be available to use once WP removes their support.
In addition, has anyone tried using https://www.classicpress.net/ as an alternative? It seems like it might be a viable option, but I’m not certain the longevity of support for the Enfold theme and 3rd party plugins, etc.
Appreciate any thoughts/discussion and feedback on this!
January 15, 2021 at 9:37 pm #1272828The exact verbage is:
Classic Editor is an official WordPress plugin, and will be fully supported and maintained until at least 2022, or as long as is necessary.
With 5 million active installs and installs increasing (link), my opinion is that Classic Ediror will still be maintained by WordPress for several more years at least. If there is a decision to abandon the project, then I woudl expect an independent developer to take over the Classic Editor project.
Classic Press is another option, but you are right in that compatibility with Enfold is not assured, nor with other plugins you may use.January 15, 2021 at 11:09 pm #1272832Thanks for your input!
So am I correct in assuming that the Classic Editor plugin is all it will take to utilize Elfold’s Classic Editor option?
I was under the impression that WP development itself was moving away from supporting the Classic Editor interface by the end of 2021. Will we be able to continue forward with just utilizing the CE plugin to maintain current functionality?
Thanks again for any thoughts/comments/discussion!
January 15, 2021 at 11:17 pm #1272833Currently, you don’t even need to install the Classic Editor plugin, just select the option from the theme options:
Given the popularity of the Classic Editor, I believe that in terms of support until or as long as is necessary, the later will apply.January 15, 2021 at 11:21 pm #1272834Right… I don’t currently use the Classic Editor plugin… that’s why I was curious as to the Kriesi team’s perspective on things.
If the WP Dev team drops support for the Classic Editor interface by 2022, will the CE plugin suffice to keep everything as we are currently accustomed to?

We can’t say for sure what will happen with WordPress core, but it would surprise me a lot if they dropped it from core as soon as the end of this year. If that were to happen though, I’m sure the editor will be picked up and developed as a plugin instead. That should hopefully mean that there won’t be any problems for anyone.

Just to clarify though… the CE plugin alone (rather than the WP core) will allow Enfold to continue as it currently is?
Thanks much!
