Hi there,
We think it’s maybe a good idea to set up a child theme on one of our sites. The problem is that the site has been up and running for some time. I believe modifications may have been to some of the php files & we also have some Quick CSS. Last time we attempted this with another site we got a fatal error so a little nervous about doing so with the this live site. Could you please advice as to the best procedure to ensure that none of our settings are lost and to avoid the site crashing?
Many thanks,
Robert

Are you using the latest version of Enfold? if so, you can import the parent theme settings into the child theme panel using this button – http://screencast.com/t/K1YR7IjChV

Yes we are aware of the button but we were looking for a little more reassurance and the steps we should take. Regarding having the latest version of Enfold – we don’t have it that’s why we want to set up a child theme!

February 3, 2015 at 9:12 am #389897Hi,
The recommended procedure is explained in this video. Be aware though that if you have modified the theme core files having a child theme won’t prevent an update to overwrite those modifications.
If you could specify what exactly has been modified we can help you transfer those mods to the child theme set-up.

Well, that’s the problem. As I said in the initial enquiry perhaps modifications have been made to the functions.php & maybe header and footer php files.
But we don’t know php so we wouldn’t be able to recognise modifications.

February 3, 2015 at 10:16 am #389930Hi!
I’d suggest the following:
1. Perform a backup of your current theme folder via FTP.
2. Update the parent theme.
3. Create and activate the child theme. So if something goes wrong you can always rollback to the old theme.

Many thanks for your suggested procedure but if we do Step 2, we are going to lose some styling, right?
