Good morning. I was able to update to the latest version on 9 sites this a.m. Three have failed. The error message is as follows:

An error occurred while updating Enfold: Could not move the old version to the upgrade-temp-backup directory.

I cannot find a great solution to the fix. This happened once before to one site and I had to reinstall the entire theme – which also affected my site. Is there some type of fix to this error without having to go through a complete reinstall?

I have also tried this plug in the past which did not work. https://www.envato.com/lp/market-plugin/

I am looking through notes and two of the sites this has happened to before: See Private Content Below:
You went in last time and did a fix. If you can do the same and share the fix, it would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,

    Thank you for the inquiry.

This might be related to a new rollback feature that was released very recently.

    // https://make.wordpress.org/core/2023/07/11/new-in-6-3-rollback-for-failed-manual-plugin-and-theme-updates/

Try to fix the issue by creating the /wp-content/upgrade-temp-backup folder manually, then set the permission to 775. Let us know if this helps.

    Best regards,
    Ismael

    Hi,

Could this change in permissions make a difference in the update working and not working?

Yes, it might be related to folder permissions. Granting write permissions to the user group performing the rollback procedure might help.

Is this a WordPress issue that they are going to correct – or is it something on Enfold’s end?

We are not really sure but since the error is generated by a WordPress core function, it’s more likely that this is related to the interaction between the server and WordPress.

    Best regards,
    Ismael

    Hi,

Within the upgrade-temp-backup folder is a theme folder which also had permissions 755. Should that change to – to 775 as well?

This might not be necessary because the function only requires write access to the temp folder to move the old theme/plugin between locations. If you have the time, you could consider posting this on a general WordPress forum for further clarification.

    – hoping to report this was the fix!

We sure hope that this will fix the issue. Let us know if you find anything.

    Best regards,
    Ismael

    Hi,
Hopefully you have found the solution, would you like us to keep this thread open until the next update, or shall we close this thread and you will open a new thread is you have further trouble?

    Best regards,
    Mike
