This is a weird one …
My client updated his Enfold theme this morning and since then some images that are used as a background of a content block aren’t visible any more.
I’ve searched and searched but I can’t find a reason …
I have put links to both situation in the private content and here are the shortcodes of both pages:
With this shortcode the image is visible:
[av_section min_height='50' min_height_px='500px' padding='default' shadow='no-shadow' bottom_border='no-border-styling' bottom_border_diagonal_color='#333333' bottom_border_diagonal_direction='' bottom_border_style='' custom_arrow_bg='' id='' color='main_color' background='bg_color' custom_bg='' background_gradient_color1='' background_gradient_color2='' background_gradient_direction='vertical' src='https://explore.be/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Hurtigruten-Antarctica-Neko-Harbour-117534-©-Hurtigruten-Andreas-Kalvig-Anderson-1.jpg' attachment='8514' attachment_size='full' attach='scroll' position='center center' repeat='stretch' video='' video_ratio='16:9' overlay_opacity='0.5' overlay_color='' overlay_pattern='' overlay_custom_pattern='' av_element_hidden_in_editor='0' av_uid='av-2teyq4v' custom_class='reizenheader']
[/av_section]With this shortcode the image is NOT visble:
[av_section min_height='50' min_height_px='500px' padding='default' shadow='no-shadow' bottom_border='no-border-styling' bottom_border_diagonal_color='#333333' bottom_border_diagonal_direction='' bottom_border_style='' custom_margin='0px' custom_margin_sync='true' custom_arrow_bg='' id='' color='main_color' background='bg_color' custom_bg='' background_gradient_color1='' background_gradient_color2='' background_gradient_direction='vertical' src='https://nordic.swingcontent.be/SwingContent/FileCache/0/1847/Hurtigruten-Groenland-Huizen-74238-c-Birgit-Ohlin-Hurtigruten.jpg' attachment='' attachment_size='full' attach='scroll' position='center center' repeat='stretch' video='' video_ratio='16:9' overlay_opacity='0.5' overlay_color='' overlay_pattern='' overlay_custom_pattern='' av_element_hidden_in_editor='0' av_uid='' custom_class='reizenheader']
[/av_section]When I edit the content block where the image is NOT visible with the Layout Editor I see the image as background. But not on front-end …
Also the image that doesn’t display comes from an external sever (I use WP All Import to do this) but until this morning everything worked fine. So I don’t think that this has something to do with it. (Other images on that page that aren’t used as a background but as a normal image and that also come from an external server DO get displayed.)
I’m not sure if you will find something in the shortcode but please check the links in the private content and then look at the source.
Thank you.
February 13, 2019 at 9:58 pm #1066655I found something …
when there is nothing between the quote marks, the image does not show up …
1/ There can’t be something between those quotemarks, because normally the ID of the image is there, but because that image is not in the media library, there can’t be any ID …
2/ Before this wasn’t an issue. I checked it out in a backup: it was not necessary that there was an ID there …How can I solve this? Is there a way that images show up if there is nothing between the quote marks? Like it was before.
Thank you.
February 13, 2019 at 10:11 pm #1066656Also: we only have the problem when we want to use an image as a background of a content block.
When we use an external hosted image in the image-widget, then there is no problem. So I checked the shortcode and I saw that that ” attachment=” ” isn’t there …[av_image src='https://nordic.swingcontent.be/SwingContent/FileCache/0/1819/Caraïben-NY-Miami.png' attachment_size='full' align='center' styling='' hover='' link='' target='' caption='' font_size='' appearance='' overlay_opacity='0.4' overlay_color='#000000' overlay_text_color='#ffffff' animation='no-animation' custom_class='' admin_preview_bg=''][/av_image]
So the solution is that that ” attachment=” ” doesn’t has to be in the shortcode of a content block … But how on earth can I do that?
February 14, 2019 at 8:00 am #1066831Hi,
Thanks for the update, it looks like you have active caching on the site? Could you try to clear that and disable the plugin first of all?
Best regards,
RikardFebruary 14, 2019 at 8:44 am #1066849Hi Rikard
Thank you for the reply.
I disabled the cache plugin.February 15, 2019 at 6:18 am #1067299Hi,
Thanks for the update. Please send us a temporary admin login and login URL so that we can have a closer look. You can post the details in the Private Content section of your reply.
Best regards,
RikardFebruary 18, 2019 at 11:50 am #1068283Ok. Login credentials in Private but it’s like I said: it has something to do with that attachment=” ” piece of code. For some reason it’s now something essential (it must be filled in) but before this wasn’t the case.
Also notice the difference between content blocks and the image widget. With content blocks the attachment=” ” is indispensable now, but for the image widget it isn’t.
Thanks Rikard!
February 20, 2019 at 12:16 pm #1069421Hi Rikard
Did you find time to take a look at this problem?
The site is online and my client is getting a bit nervous because of the fact that those header images don’t show up.If I knew for sure that it wasn’t possible I would have started to look for another solution, but because I know that before it was working perfect, I still hope that this issues can be solved.
Thank you
February 23, 2019 at 7:19 pm #1070748Hi,
Thank you for contacting us and sorry for the late reply.
I have tried your shortcode on my local system but the same issue repeats.
However, the background image feature works fine for color sections.
It appears the issue may be a server related issue. The server may have some sort of limitation. May I know what is the reason to host the images on a different server? Will it be possible to copy the images to the same site and upload it? I assure you that this will work properly for you without any issue during the theme updates.
Best regards,
VinayFebruary 25, 2019 at 3:49 pm #1071314Hello Vinay
There is no other option then use images that are hosted elsewhere. Those posts get synced each day and all content comes from an external server. It is like it is my client works. (Then don’t edit anything on the site itself. Everything in their own in-house-sytsem.)
But what more is: before the updates it all worked …
And also: when we do the same thing for a normal image, the image is visible. It’s only for content sections that there is a problem and that they don’t show up …
So … What does this mean now? What can I do to fix this?
February 28, 2019 at 5:15 pm #1072673Hi Vinay and Rikard
Thanks already for the time you took to take a look at this issue. But what can I do now?
It’s like I said before: until the last update it all worked fine … In my opinion it has something to do with the attachment argument … Is there a way to disable this? (Cfr like it is in the image widget. Because there we do exact the same thing and there it works.)
It’s not an option that we first upload the images and then use them as a background of a content block because my client doesn’t do anything on the website itself. They put all the content in their own internal system and then that system syncs with the website a few time per week.
Also I did some tests with images that are hosted on another sever then the one we use now but the same thing happens.
March 2, 2019 at 6:02 am #1073516Hi,
Sorry for the late reply, the dev team has released a bug fix version has solved a couple of issues, and perhaps one of these issues is related to your issue. Please include FTP access in the Private Content area so we can try uploading this version to your site.Best regards,
MikeMarch 5, 2019 at 3:12 pm #1074899Thank you Mike!

March 6, 2019 at 4:48 am #1075243Hi,
Thank you for the FTP access, I renamed your current theme to “enfold-old” then I uploaded the new “enfold” and checked that your site is working correctly. Please also check for yourself.
Once you are happy you, (or I) can delete the “enfold-old” via ftp, (not the WP theme page)
Should for some reason you wish to roll-back to the old version, it’s easy to do, simply rename the new “enfold” to “enfold-new” via ftp and then rename “enfold-old” to “enfold” then refresh your page.Ok, so I see you were using v4.5.2 and the page with no image at the top was editing in the default editor, and not in the advanced layout builder, I opened the page in the ALB and tried to choose the top color section background image again but I couldn’t find it in your media library, which was odd because I see that I can access it directly with the link you posted above.
Please see if you can choose the image again and then save, I have seen issues where this was a solution.I also see that you are using the ALB debugger, that allows you to copy and edit the shortcode, but below that you should have the “Enfold Shortcode Parser” that allows you to check for broken shortcode, but you don’t, instead you have “WP Types” options.
Is this page a custom post type that you created, and the page with the image that works is a normal “page”?I also note that you have a javascript error on the page:
Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property 'value' of undefined
I tried disabling the merged JS and loaded the jQuery in the head to resolve this, but it didn’t. This may not be a part of the image issue, but I wanted to let you know why I did that. If you don’t mind, lets continue with these settings while we try to solve this.
Is this the only page that has this issue?Best regards,
MikeMarch 6, 2019 at 11:13 am #1075447Wow MIke … No.
The whole site was messed up now … Homepage layout was broken and all the pages where we had that issue with the background image of the content blocks didn’t even exist any more …
I tried to activate the “old” version but all problems stayed …
Then I saw that certain plugins were deactivated and settings were changed … I understand that you did some tests but how did you not see that the site was completely broken??
My client was getting crazy … This site has 1000 visitors a day … 35 people work there. It’s their entire income!
This is terrible …- This reply was modified 5 years, 9 months ago by jurgen1979.
March 7, 2019 at 6:11 am #1075773Hi,
Sorry I didn’t see any changes on the pages that I looked at, did your client have modifications in the functions.php of your old version? That would account for such changes when switching themes.
I didn’t change any plugin settings or deactivate any of them, I tried to document what I did and looked at.
I’m sorry that this happened.Best regards,
MikeMarch 7, 2019 at 11:43 am #1075934No prob, it is solved now. (Except for that image thing off course :-) )
There are no huge changes in functions.php. In fact, there are NO changes in the functions.php file itself. There is a plugin for that (My Custom Functions) where there is some code to do very small adjustments.
Can you send me that bèta version so that I can test it myself? Because because of the fact they had to restore a backup that new version is gone …

March 7, 2019 at 2:14 pm #1075985I saw that the version where you talked about wasn’t a beta but the version that is available for download. So I installed that … And things went wrong again …
For some reason posts don’t get displayed any more. I just see the header and the footer … My God.
I’m restoring a backup – again – and then … I don’t know yet what I will do.
Will keep you posted.
March 7, 2019 at 2:51 pm #1075993Hi,
The version I installed was not the same version you can download, it was one with many fixes from the dev team, they just didn’t change the version number. But It should not have caused such trouble, I’ve used it to fix about six sites before yours. But it is why I installed it and renamed your old one “enfold-old”, so we could easily roll back.
Anyways I’m glad you can restore. Does your webhost offer one click staging site or “clone” so that we can work on a clone and leave the live site alone?
Here are some screenshots of what it might look like:
Please keep us posted.
Best regards,
MikeMarch 7, 2019 at 5:08 pm #1076050Hi Mike
First of all: thanks for your help.
Second: while I was restoring a backup I was thinking that maybe I just could place an older version of Enfold back. Just to check.
So I did … And … It all works … Now I’m working with 4.4.1. You can see for yourself: https://explore.be/zeereis/hurtigruten-groepsreis-nieuwjaar-in-antarctica. The image in the background is back!
So now I’m 100% sure that “something” is changed with Enfold that causes the problems.
They have indeed such an option for staging … I should check it out. For now … crisis is a bit over :-) The site works so that’s the most important thing. I’ll try to figure out how that staging thing works on their hosting, then I come back to this thread.
Thanks again for all the time and help!
March 8, 2019 at 1:46 am #1076187Hi,
Glad to hear that the crisis is over. Many of our users use staging sites to test updates before updating their live sites, you may also benefit from this approach. The dev team is still making adjustments to the next version, that I was going to try on your site.
So I would recommend waiting for the next version to be released and then test on your staging site first.
We can leave this open if you wish, or we can close it and open a new thread if you find issues with the new version.
Closing it would keep a bunch of people from adding their “me too” comments :)Best regards,
MikeMarch 8, 2019 at 9:40 am #1076270You’re right. Let’s close this thing!
Thanks Mike (and Vinay and Rikard)!March 8, 2019 at 1:50 pm #1076364Hi,
Glad we were able to help, we will close this now. Thank you for using Enfold. For your information, you can take a look at Enfold documentation here
For any other questions or issues, feel free to start new threads under Enfold sub forum and we will gladly try to help you :)Best regards,
