    Hello,

    Recently I received notice that an updated version of Enfold is available and that I should update the theme. I have been nervous about doing so for fear I might mess something up.

    The only thing we added as a customization was a snippet of code your team recommended to fix an issue via Quick CSS in the Enfold back end. Not sure that would be considered a custom change or if the update would remove the snippet? I suppose we could always add the snippet again….

    In researching this topic, I discovered this page with a video and a child theme to download: Enfold Video and Child Theme Download

    I’ve downloaded the update and also downloaded the child theme from the page above. The instructions seem pretty clear and easy, but the child theme is three years old. Has there been an update to the child theme your team is recommending? If so, where is it located?

    I’m not an expert on Child themes. In fact, it is a little confusing. Once it is uploaded, I presume I will still work (add pages/make changes) from the Enfold backend as normal and won’t have to worry about the child theme again?

    Thoughts?

    Thank you,

    Bob

    Hey Bob,

    Thanks for getting in touch with us!

    You only need to update the parent theme. The child theme is where you keep all your customization code, like any custom styling or special function you need coded.

    The child theme pulls every other function, style and so on from the parent theme and so only the parent theme has to be updated.

    Hope this explains things and makes it a bit clearer. Let me know if you need further assistance.

    Best regards,
    Jordan

    Hello Jordan and team,

    Thanks for the response.

    Would this snippet of code be considered customization — Dropped the code into the quick CSS function of Enfold:

    .main_color .required {
    color: white;
    }

    It almost sounds like I don’t need to add a child theme…. so I should simply proceed with the update?

    Thank you,

    Bob

    Hi Bob,

    If you only have that CSS in Quick CSS then a child theme should not be necessary, but please consider creating one if you should do any further customisations in the future.

    Thanks,
    Rikard
