OK – so seeing as I don’t generally delve into server settings, is there a simple reason for this suddenly happening when I try to edit any page.
I’ve cleared cookies and cache from both Chrome and Safari (running under OSX Yosemite) on two separate Macs and get access to wp-admin for maybe two or three clicks before getting the bad request message.
I haven’t added anything new to the site for a while (in terms of plug-ons) and only updated to WP 4.1 after this error started to occur, in an attempt to see if that would fix it.

Did some more digging and it looks like it’s Yoast’s Google Analytics plug-in that’s the culprit. Turned off and not had an instance ofthe error, so tracking code is pasted into the theme otions instead.
Odd for it to start misbehaving, I may have updated it without thinking! (or remembering I did so!)
