There’s only one way to use custom icons correct? by uploading them to fontello.com

When I try to upload them in a .svg format i get an error on fontello.com, i’d love to not use fontello and just directly upload to wordpress via ftp or something else but then I can’t use them as an icon?? via the “icon-box” thing
