Layer Slider is free, it comes with the theme. Only the premium features are not available, but they are not necessary to make a video background.

The code for the widget in the header is correct, there must have been some warning that was output and so it seemed to break stuff.

You could also edit the helper-main-menu.php in a child theme and put the code there.

We can only help you with the issues with Enfold, we cannot guarantee anything beyond that, there are too many variables from the server configuration, to plugins and customizations, that are out of our control.
