No this one is not solved. I am looking for a replacement of the default text, in English somethign like “Select an option”.

In the settings of the variable product instance (not in the settings of the WooCommerce -> Settings -> product) is the check/uncheck to suppress comments.
Case closed.
I was able to input the user-defined ones. The default in German something like “Select an option” wasn’t created by me.

thanks for your response. Yesterday evening I decided to clear all cache from Firefox. Today (as a result?) the https://xxx.yyy:55555 loads without problems.
Hence I withdraw my request for support, and hope that this solved the problem, although I feel uncomfortable with spontaneous “healings”.
