I made a test here and it still looks pixelated on IE, so it’s more of a browser issue rather than a theme one, i’d recommend you to use a smaller image.

The masonry gallery does have a white background, and padding looks ok, can you post a screenshot of your view?

Sorry for that, to be honest i’m not sure if that fix could have done the trick, i wish i could help you on this but i can’t, none of my computers (Mac) have Safari 5.0, the oldest version i can test something is 6.0 and it works fine there, as you said.
