That is just a choice from theme designers as a best design choice decision. As of right now there is no GUI option to remove the border, but it can be hidden via css. What other pages was the css not working for?

The following should take care of the top area also. It is also written so that it does in fact work on mobile:

Which shortcode specifically are you trying to add. If it is just a button you can add raw html to the text widget to achieve the same thing.
