I tried what was written in the article but it made no difference. I then contacted my host and had them increase the PHP Memory Limit to 128mb. I also got them to increase the max file upload size to 20mb.

Theme works fine now without any modification to the wp_config.php file.

Hope this helps anyone in a similar situation.
