Thanks Ismael.
I’ve actually taken a simpler route. I changed my page to a 2/3 and 1/3 layout and added Text Blocks, Icon List and Google Map content items into the 1/3 section (duplicating what was in my sidebar). I was then able to get rid of the sidebar from that page. My only issue is that I no longer have a vertical border between the two content areas (I don’t want a border around the whole element – just on one side).
I still firmly believe that the new performance settings do not work when using a layout builder directly inside a Sidebar widget (such as Custom HTML) and this should warrant further testing.
Regards
AlanHi Nikko,
After trying your suggestion the page reports no errors in the short codes, when I subsequently set the Performance to ‘Load Only Used Elements’ the icon list still reports it is disabled.
As I mentioned in my original question, the icon list is displayed on the page via a Sidebar using the Custom HTML widget. The markup in the sidebar widget is correct as it works perfectly when I set the Performance to ‘Always load elements’.
Unfortunately, there is no layout builder when working with widgets and I suspect the algorithm for detecting which layout items are used on a particular site does not look at the content of widgets which is why it doesn’t detect that I need the icon list loaded.

AlanHi,
I’ve installed Simple Image Sizes plugin and used this to create some custom thumbnail sizes for my home page and a gallery on one of my blogs. This works fine and Google, GTMetrix, Pingdom etc are all happy.I am unsure though how I employ this tactic with the Portfolio page which shows a Masonry Gallery and also individual portfolio items which use masonry to show images. The number of columns varies. The default image size for masonry is 705×705 but this size would be different based upon number of columns and the type of masonry layout. I am currently using flexible masonry. Is there another way I should be doing this – I would rather serve an image closer to the actual layout size rather than a 705x705px image.
Regards
AlanHi Rikard,
The problem appears to be with portfolio entries that use flexible masonry. As you change the window size on the browser, the image gets resized to fit (same if you zoom). On my laptop, at normal screen resolution (Ctrl-0), Firebug tells me the image size is about 232x232px – Google Page Insights reports 183x183px probably because their virtual browser has a different screen resolution.The other thing that bothers me is that the image thumbnail being loaded is 705x705px – why not choose a thumbnail a little closer to the actual render size.

AlanHi Nikko,
Your code is all good but it uses lots of magic numbers and is not very portable. As I have said before, the breadcrumbs work perfectly EXCEPT when using the hamburger menu, Nobody has yet explained why they should break when using the hamburger menu – what different code does it run.
I will try to see if I can get a similar result using a Portfolio Entry – maybe I just won’t assign it a category.

AlanHi Rikard,
I tried using BWP Minify but I was getting strange results. On my dev machine all was working fine, however when I tried it on the live site I found that the LayerSlider did not work as there were some javascript errors in the console. I compared the file order in the Enqueue Files tab and where they were being loaded and both dev and live were the same. I have removed BWP Minify from the live site at the moment and will be looking at using Cloudfare.
With regards to the images, I have been using Imagify on the live site but Google still complains. Google thinks the images in the masonry are 183x183px but on my dev machine, Firebug reports a different size. I guess the size varies depending upon the width of the screen. I don’t see how I can always serve a perfectly image when using masonry.

AlanHi Nikko,
I did have a mild heart attack when I saw the site since unfortunately your change coincided with my hosting company moving me to a different server as the one I was on seemed slow. I managed to get into the cPanel and fix the missing ‘)’ when I worked out where it was missing – I am a .NET programmer by trade so not an issue.
It seems to work. Ismael was asking about the structure of me using a page for pendants instead of portfolio item. If there is a better way of doing it then I am open to suggestions as I am quite new to WordPress. I really wanted Home/Portfolio/Bracelets, Home/Portfolio/Pendants with subcategories like Home/Portfolio/Pendants/Layered but I couldn’t get this to work with the way that the Masonry Gallery selects parent and sub-categories. I only want the Portfolio page to show the top level categories (Bracelets,Cufflinks,Earring,Pendants,Other).
Still learning ..

AlanPendants is a parent category for other portfolio items. My portfolio items such as Layered belongs to both the Pendant and Layered (a sub-category of Pendants) categories. In the Masonry Gallery, even though I only selected Pendants, it showed both Pendants and Layered. My client did not want this, so I created a separate page for Pendants with a second Masonry Gallery to show the different sub-categories of Pendants.
The breadcrumbs worked fine on a full-screen display without any additional code. They only seem to be messed up when you have a smaller screen and use the hamburger menu to navigate. It is the hamburger menu that screws it up.
Regards
AlanBetter but now the Pendant links are incorrect. I have two pages Portfolio which shows Cufflinks, Bracelets and Earrings and a separate page Pendants which shows the different types of pendants. The first show as
Home -> Portfolio -> Cufflinks
Home -> Portfolio -> Bracelets
Home -> Portfolio -> Earringsand the Pendants show as Home -> Pendants with sub-categories like Home -> Pendants -> Layered.
I ideally wanted Pendants under Portfolio, so that it would show Home -> Portfolio -> Pendants -> Layered, but I didn’t want the main Portfolio page showing all the subcategories of Pendants, just Pendants.
Why is this happening in the first place – it only seems to be an issue from the hamburger menu not the normal menu. Is this a bug in the Enfold theme code??
The site is only in development at the moment and is not live yet. Due to the erratic nature of the slider presentation I have ditched it in favour of the LayerSlider which performs more predictably.
I was looking for some hints about how image sizing works as when they are not full width it seems they get scaled in height and width.
Hi Jordan,
Thanks for the information. I checked out your links and both #005eb8 and #005fb8 have a web-safe color of #0066cc (according to your link) so I still don’t understand why when I enter #005eb8 it is being changed to #005fb8 as this is no more web-safe than what I entered.I would expect that if I enter #005eb8 as my chosen color (as every other color-picker I’ve ever used allows), then that is what I get – not #005fb8. This is confusing behavior which I consider to be a fault not a feature.
