I updated the Theme and got an error: “bemodesign.com is currently unable to handle this request.
HTTP ERROR 500”I then had to put the site under a new theme that messes everything up. I am going to have to restore from back for now.
Is there a solution or reason that this happened?

Your hosting provider should be able to check the error log for you, 500 internal server error is very general and it basically only says “something went wrong” and it doesn’t tell us anything. I would recommend that you copy your site to a staging area and perform the update there first. One thing you could try out would be to increase the memory allocated to PHP on your installation: http://codex.wordpress.org/Editing_wp-config.php#Increasing_memory_allocated_to_PHP
