    Hello,

I’ve been using Enfold for quite some years now, and I really feel happy with this plugin; it has one of the best layout builders around!

However, more and more I got concerned about the content lock in issue (AKA plugin lock in or shortcode hell). When changing themes, that is deactivating the layout builder, the content of the site really gets screwed up (something like the image below). This is a problem with nearly all theme using traditional, popular layout builders.

Example of content lock in, happening when changing theme or deactivating layout builder

Especially when building sites for customers that have a lot of news items (or pages), this might become a future problem; what am I going to tell them when Kriesi decides to stop developing Enfold’s layout builder, of when the customer wants a new theme?

There are a few layout builders not having this problem, like Beaver Builder (paid) and Elementor (free).

Wat is your future idea about content lock in regarding Enfold?

    Hey Marc,

I agree with you, it is a problem. Short term we don’t really have a plan for this unfortunately, but long term this is absolutely something that we would like to work towards. I know that Beaver Builder supports this, didn’t know about Elementor though. If they can do then we should be able to do it too. But like I said, this would be something that is not done over night.

    Best regards,
    Rikard

Hi Rikard, thnx for the honest reply; really appreciated! ;-)

Beaver Builder and Elementor (https://wordpress.org/plugins/elementor) are brand new builders, they don’t have to deal with backwards compatibility. That’ll be a kind of issue for Enfold, I guess…

Thrive faced the same problem (backwards compatibility), but now they released Thrive Architect, problems seem to be solved for them.

Hope you guys will pay attention pretty soon, since ‘content lock in’ or ‘plugin lock in’ creates quite some rumours at the internet, like here:
