I would like to add a widget area similar to this documentation: http://kriesi.at/documentation/enfold/adding-a-widget-area-to-the-header/
I would like to have the widget not in the header area but in the header_meta, ie here:what would be the best approach?

You can use shortcodes or HTML in phone info field in Enfold theme options > Header > Extra Elements. Would that work for you? :)

That is possible with the header widget as well, but you will probably need to adjust the CSS a bit. Could you add it then let us know so that we can adjust the CSS for you?
