Hi folks, I am setting up a child theme so I can add some code to my header.php file and not have to do so every time I update the Enfold parent theme. This is my first time working with a child theme so please let me know if I am doing this correctly.

Once I create the child theme and add it to my file manager via ftp, I need to activate it from within wordpress via appearance>themes>enfold-child>activate

Once I activate the child theme, I need to import the theme settings from my parent theme (and will still have to make a few minor changes to the menu, footer, etc.)

I think I have a solid understanding on those steps. My main question it…

Moving forward, do I keep the child theme active and make all of my website changes and adjustments via the ‘child-theme’ theme that is active within wordpress? Is there any need to make the parent theme active again, or do I treat the child-theme as my new active wordpress theme?

How is this treated and handled when there is a parent theme update?

    Hey johnrburke2,

You are correct in your assumptions, your child theme is your new main theme and all the changes you want to make should be done to the child. The only purpose of a child theme is to override the parent, for reasons like not losing edits on updates for instance.

    Best regards,

My child theme is working perfectly. After activating the child theme, I had to revise my navigation menu slightly, completely re-create my footer widgets, and re-select my theme color option. Other than that, everything worked out good and my understanding is that future updates will not affect my progress with the child-theme.

Thanks for your help, You can close this thread unless you would like to keep it open for other conversation.

PS: I just created another thread about adding something to all pages, rather than 1-by-1, your attention to that would be great!
