If I password protect a page, when a user views the page, the page is initially blank except for the password field and a little text. How can I edit that page (what the user sees before entering the password). I’d like to add a background image and some text.

I do not see a blank page, but header / footer is there.
It uses the page content to work and that is an function of WP.
To modify it, you will have to do some advanced modifications. If you are not able to do the, pelase do hire an expert to assist you with that.Best regards,
