I have a portfolio set up on this website into different categories that I have displayed on different pages – however the next/previous buttons don’t go to the next portfolio item – they are just random. Is there any way to set this to program this differently? Is the before/next set to go to a random item next or is it according to date, order?

AndyThank you for this, however I’m having a bit of trouble finding this… “Then go to the blog/post slider/portfolio/masonry grid element settings screen, scroll to the bottom of the option window and configure the order/orderby settings.”
Also where exactly do I insert that code into the php file? Anywhere? Top bottom?

I think what you are referring to as path are advanced layout builder elements and once the code is applied correctly the custom sort options will be visible in blog/post slider/portfolio/masonry which you can find once you open any wordpress page in edit mode as an admin.
To create a child theme please check this link http://kriesi.at/documentation/enfold/using-a-child-theme/
In child theme you have a file called functions.php which you can open in an text/code editor or access it via Appearance > Editor from wordpress dashboard after installing it and paste the code in there.
