The gallery set to display one big image and thumbnails below scales the image up to the full width. So when we have a page with no sidebar, the image is huge, and scaled up beyond it’s actual size so it looks terrible. The image size doesn’t change when I change the Gallery Big Preview Image Size options. I tried changing the image size to Medium 560×0 and the image was still showing at the full width of the page, which would have been over 1000 px wide. Even when I set it to “No scaling” it still scales the image up to fit the full width of the page or layout cell that it’s in.

This happens when the gallery is in a grid row, in a 1/1 row, and in no layout element (just dropped on the page). We have had to add a 2nd column on the page just to try to constrain the gallery so it doesn’t scale up the images and look terrible. But even on my 13″ MacBook Air it enlarges the image beyond it’s actual dimensions and degrades the quality.

    Hi mikehartrich!

not sure what you mean, because the images on the link you have provided look totally fine to me. Could you fix it? maybe you are seeing a cached version of it? clear browser cache and hard refresh a few times.
Can you provide us screenshots highlighting what you mean? you can use imgur.com or dropbox.

    Cheers!

Like I said in the initial post, we had to add the 2nd column to force the preview images into a size closer to what we wanted them at. This site is live and we are promoting these galleries to our members today. We couldn’t have it looking like it was. I’ve created a fake gallery for you without the side column so you can clearly see what is happening.

    Hey!

Wordpress is cropping images by default when uploading. You can control image sizes with a plugin like: https://wordpress.org/plugins/simple-image-sizes/

Wordpress does not crop images when they are uploaded, and cropping images will only reduce the size. It can resize them according to the sizes that are specified under Settings > Media. I have only ever seen images reduced in size, not enlarged by WordPress. The largest size we have set there is 780px wide. The images we are uploading are 800px wide. When we choose the images for the masonry gallery WordPress says the size is 800px wide. Enfold is displaying them at much larger sizes, probably by resizing them in the HTML.

If you are not able to help us could you please assign someone else to this ticket?

    Thanks

    Hi!

The gallery is going to use 100% of the page width or 100% of the container it’s in. So you’ll want to use images at least 1300px wide (depending on what you have the maximum container width value set in Dashboard > Enfold > General Layout > Dimensions).

You can add extra columns to shorten the container width like how you said. A column setup such as 1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 would work well. You can set the gallery in the middle column so it looks centered.

    Cheers!

Thanks Elliott. But why then does the gallery have a an option for setting the size of the big image? In the code it’s correctly giving the width and height, but then the gallery itself is over-riding that. This is a really limiting ‘feature’, I can’t see why it would be an advantage. Maybe to have a setting in the size dropdown that lets the image go full width, but then the other sizes should be honored by Enfold instead of all being over-ridden. Because we are using Enfold I can’t use normal WordPress galleries, and I have to use the Avia Layout Builder now for all the posts because if I don’t Enfold does not correctly display the page title if I have that option set in the Layout attributes of the page.

    Hey!

That’s the size of the image itself, it’s still going to take up the whole width of the container because it’s CSS is set to 100% width. Are you wanting to change it so it does not take up the full width of the container? If you do so then it will not be centered anymore and it will look bad on small screens.

    Best regards,
    Elliott
