I have had no success getting the email notification for new orders or any of the other notifications to work. I’m certain there is something that is not setup correctly. I could really use your help in understanding where the mistake is.

What happens in the default theme? It would be best to ask this question to WooCommerce support.
Double check your email address for typos and also check the spam folder as well. Also make sure all of your email settings are setup correctly in Dashboard > WooCommerce > Settings > Emails.
