Create Custom Template that Displays Sidebar

I’m using a forum plugin and I’d like all forum pages to display a custom sidebar. How can I create a template that shows the sidebar? I tried just creating a template with get_sidebar but it still doesn’t show up. I’m assuming this is because I have the sidebar turned off on everything. Is there a way to include the sidebar in a custom template?
