My website takes several seconds before it begins to load. It stays at a blank gray screen for a while and then actually loads the page, but the even then, images and objects are still loading. I’m using a MacBook Pro 2012 model with a SSD and 4GB ram with the OS 10.9.1, and Safari latest version (tried it in Chrome and same results).
I cleared my cache, reset my browser, went through the typical steps troubleshooting. I disabled all plugins except the essential ones I absolutely must use and even then, it’s like WooCommerce, so on. I don’t have Lazy Load or any speed or compression plugin installed.Site is http://homesmartsecure.com

Unfortunately without a caching plugin installed you are the mercy of your hosting provider and how fast the server will respond with the data. For most budget servers you will be on a shared hosting account where your site is sharing the resouces of all others at the same time. So the response time from server to user can be variable.
In your case I did a quick check using this site: http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/web-sites-on-web-server/ which turned up 841 other domains on the same server. I’ve not checked into its validity in a while but there are a few other similar sites/tools out there you can cross check on.

http://fdfcontractors.comYou may work around those heavy loaded servers by setting it up correctly. If you use a CDN (external or own one) to deliver the static contents and if you’re able to configure the headers and expires of your webserver, it will grant you a real boost in performance. But overall if so many instances are running on a single (or clustered) machine, you should think about a different hosting plan. Saves a lot of time and pain… :)
After investigating the responses from your server… well… about 5 secs to get the DNS resolve… ain’t that good at all. After the resolve, your page loads within 3 secs, so this ain’t that bad at all. Maybe a phonecall to your provider could help also.
Thanks to you both. I didn’t look into that before, but just did and it’s a great idea. I’ll go with cloudflare. My host offers service from them.
Both sites are showing the same yslow grade for me and only slightly better loading results. If you’ve visited the older one more often than the other it could also have more locally cached content which would make it appear to load faster as well.
As @fomrateins mentioned the response time from the server is where the main hold up is on loading in the page.
