    When I made the most recent update, the author photo disappeared from the single post page.

    The .meta-data div is blank. I’m using the child theme.

    I’m not quite sure what you mean. On that page layout the author photo isn’t supposed to show as far as I know.

    Why even have the .meta-data div in there then? Is there an easy way to add it to the single post page?

    Its just that way by design. The meta is shown because its an article (time, day, category, author name). You definitely could add an output for the photo but it would be best added in by a freelance developer so that it fits in with the layout, stay responsive, and be cross browser bug tested .
