With your latest version 5.4, in a Desktop dev system called Local By Flywall, I am unable to update the functions.php file. I get this error
Unable to communicate back with site to check for fatal errors, so the PHP change was reverted. You will need to upload your PHP file change by some other means, such as by using SFTP.
I have tested this with the prior version and it works OK. Also tested with other themes and it is OK
Also it DOES update in a live environment.
Seems something in your latest version is causing an issue with this
When the update version comes out I will test itThanks
P.S. Writing here as I had no other way to send an error report that I know of.

Thank you for the inquiry.
This might be an issue with the file permissions, which you will have to check with your hosting provider. Have you tried editing the file via S/FTP?

IsmaelFebruary 21, 2023 at 4:33 am #1398720I think you missed what I said
1. it is a Desktop Server called Local By Flywall.
and
2. It only happens with your latest version 5.4. other previous versions dont show this error and WILL update…I have tested it with many themes and I only get this with your version 5.4
February 21, 2023 at 4:41 am #1398722Hi,
Sorry about that. Have you tried editing the file in your IDE or any text editor directly instead of doing it in the Appearance > File Editor panel? Since this is a local installation, it will be difficult for us to debug issue. Editing via the theme file editor works correctly on our local installation using the latest version of the theme.
Best regards,
IsmaelFebruary 21, 2023 at 4:44 am #1398723Yes I can edit that way. But was trying to let you know of a possible error causing this in your new version.
Hoping it can be fixed in the new version…February 21, 2023 at 5:29 am #1398727Hi,
Have you tried enabling debugging? There might be an error generated somewhere, which prevents saving from going through. You should also deactivate the plugins temporarily.
Best regards,
