It seems Enfold does not update the same way as many other themes :)
I’ve purchased the latest version 4.8 (using a different Envato account from the 4.5 purchase if that matters).
I’ve also generates a private token on the Envato site and entered it in the Enfold options.
But then what do I do?

Have you inserted your Personal Token in Enfold theme options? If that does not work, please try using Envato Market plugin – https://envato.com/market-plugin/ and check if that helps.
If that too does not help, I am afraid you would need to manually update the theme. You can simply login on ThemeForest account you used to purchase the theme and download the latest version of the theme from Downloads page and install it in Appearance > Themes > Add New :)

thanks, as I said, I’ve already entered my personal token in the Enfold options.
I wasn’t sure which permissions were required by the Enfold theme updater, but after adding some additional permissions to the token, Enfold was able to identify my purchase and my username.
Will it update by itself within a days’ time now, or what?

OK, so right after I wrote the last message, I checked back, and it now said I was using the latest version (4.5.1). There was also a link to “Check manually”, and when I clicked it, I was offered an upgrade to the 4.8 version which has now been installed.
The site looks almost as it should after the update… So I’ll see if I can make the changes to make it look correct ;-)
