Updated from 3.8 to 4.7.4
Upgraded to PHP 7.2 and receive this error ‘There has been a critical error on your website.’
I have a child theme with only CSS.I had to revert back to 3.8 but the Enfold page builder is now conflicting with the new WP page editor.
Please help.
May 5, 2020 at 10:20 pm #1210095Hi jknetdesign,
Can you tell us what specific error is shown?
The best way to know what’s causing the crash is to enable debugging: https://wordpress.org/support/article/debugging-in-wordpress/// Enable WP_DEBUG mode define( 'WP_DEBUG', true ); // Enable Debug logging to the /wp-content/debug.log file define( 'WP_DEBUG_LOG', true ); // Disable display of errors and warnings define( 'WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY', false );
And when it crashes check for the debug.log file and you’ll most likely find the reason for crashing.
Also since there’s a huge gap between versions it would be better to create a staging site first and update there to know if there will be issues during and after update.
Here’s an article on how to setup a staging site: https://themeisle.com/blog/wordpress-staging-site/Best regards,
NikkoMay 8, 2020 at 5:06 pm #1211087Please help.
I’m still on version 3.8 and now I get this error when I try to edit a page.
“There has been a critical error on your site… ”Please do not suggest a staging site.
I generated this error from the error_log

Yes, a staging site is just a suggestion but not really a requirement.
As for the error, it’s a bit harder to debug since you’re using the latest version of WordPress with a fairly outdated version of Enfold.
There’s a similar error that I could find in the forum: https://kriesi.at/support/topic/unable-to-edit-pages-somethings-wrong-with-enfold/#post-1115435
However, the solution is to update in Enfold 4.5.x version.
Can you tell us what conflict you’re having between Enfold Advanced Layout Builder and WP Page Editor? is it the Gutenberg Block Editor or the Classic Editor? there’s a setting in the latest version of Enfold to switch to classic editor which most find their issues to be resolved.Best regards,
NikkoMay 8, 2020 at 8:46 pm #1211192The most current download is 4.7.4. Are you saying you have a 4.5 ???
Can you send it to me please?
May 8, 2020 at 9:06 pm #1211207Hi jknetdesign,
Yes, it’s a stable version but it’s not the latest one and was released May last year.
Please check private content.Best regards,
NikkoMay 9, 2020 at 6:35 am #1211353I appreciate it. I get the same issue with this theme and I cant even get to the dashboard. Can I ask you to please take a look.

I think it would be better to update to the latest version of Enfold then try to resolve the issue with Page Editor.Best regards,
NikkoMay 9, 2020 at 8:31 pm #1211491Instead of all this back and forth, why can’t you activate the latest theme so you can see what I’m saying. The theme is on the server and you have my FTP and WP.
Here’s my description of the conflict just so you have it now: the standard WP editor is above the Layout Builder, and we CAN NOT update content. This is happening now, with the newest WP and the old Enfold theme.
I know you mentioned the classic setting, but when I activate the new theme
I…can’t…access…the dashboard. Can you connect FTP and troubleshoot?
PLEASE HELP
May 9, 2020 at 10:31 pm #1211518Hi jknetdesign,
Sure, we will help you out.
I was hesitating to do any action on your live site since you may have active users on the site.Best regards,
NikkoMay 9, 2020 at 10:34 pm #1211519Hi jknetdesign,
Also, I forgot to mention, please provide temporary admin access to the WordPress Dashboard since you only gave us FTP access but not wp-admin.
Best regards,
NikkoMay 10, 2020 at 3:24 am #1211562Thank you so much. it’s in the private data.
May 11, 2020 at 5:24 am #1211735Hey Nikko, please dont forget about me. I tried to revert to an older WP and had other issues.
May 12, 2020 at 12:52 am #1211929Hi. Please let me know if I’m on my own for this issue. We have urgent content to update but we are not capable of doing so.
May 12, 2020 at 1:43 am #1211946Hi jknetdesign,
I apologize for the delay, I’m currently checking on your issue.

NikkoMay 12, 2020 at 1:59 am #1211948Hi jknetdesign,
Please check again.
I have updated your site to Enfold 4.7.4 and it seems to be working well.
I have checked it and there were no PHP or JS errors.Best regards,
NikkoMay 12, 2020 at 2:13 am #1211950How did you do it?
I see the new theme, so thats good and I can get into the pages to edit them.
What’s going on with the Photos page? The Gutenberg editor for the gallery is not there. Also, the 9,000 8th Graders page. Is this because we need the editor set to classic? Do you suggest I use the Advanced Builder to re-add the photo gallery?
May 12, 2020 at 2:40 am #1211952Hi jknetdesign,
These are the steps I made:
– I switched first to Twentytwenty in the WP Dashboard (deleted Enfold 4.5.7 since two Enfold themes installed with different versions causes issue)
– In FTP, moved enfold folder from themes folder to wp-content folder.
– Uploaded Enfold 4.7.4 and switched back to the child theme
– In Enfold Theme Options > Select Your Editor, set this to Use WP Classic Editor
But since you are using Gutenberg, I suggest setting it back to Block Editor.
The problem I’ve seen on this is that Gutenberg seems to show up and if you scroll bottom you’ll see the ALB Editor, this isn’t an issue with WP 5.3.3 and below but when it’s 5.4.1 this minor issue seems to appear.
The best way to handle this issue right now since there’s no update yet from Enfold is to use a Classic Editor plugin which also has the option to make you use either block editor or classic editor.Best regards,
NikkoMay 12, 2020 at 3:01 am #1211965Understood and thank you so much. Can I ask another question? Lets say the client wants to allow visitors to be able to download photos. Whats the simplest way to do this you think?
May 12, 2020 at 3:57 am #1211976Hi jknetdesign,
You’re welcome.
I think the simplest way, without a plugin is to use a Text Block/Code Block and a text link.
Using a Text Mode (not Visual) in the Text Block, paste this code and replace IMAGE_URL with the correct image url:<a href="IMAGE_URL" class="noLightbox" download>Download</a>
That should be it, clicking it will automatically download the image.
Best regards,
Nikko -
