I wanted to double-check something…
I’ve been manually updating my Enfold theme (the main Parent theme) for years now–because the auto-update function within WordPress simply does not work.
No problem. It always works (no errors) and my Parent theme is currently at 4.6.3.1 (the latest, as far as I know).
However, my child theme version is still 1.0–same as the day I created it years ago. Can, I assume that I should never attempt to “update” the Child theme?
Am I thinking about this correctly? The Parent theme is the only one that ever needs to be updated with new versions?
Do I ever need to do ANYTHING to the Child theme? If so, what?
Thanks in advance.
December 3, 2019 at 7:37 am #1162086Hey Bobby,
The only function of a child theme is to override the parent, it rarely has to be updated unless something like a function name or a CSS class has been changed in the parent theme. If it does need to be updated then it is never automatic, it always has to be done by yourself.
If you need for us to have a look at why the automatic updates are not working then please include admin login details in private.

RikardDecember 3, 2019 at 6:21 pm #1162305It would be GREAT if you could look into why my theme isn’t auto-updating anymore. It used to—during the first couple years I had the theme—but then just mysteriously stopped one day. Login info provided in the ‘private’ section.
December 4, 2019 at 6:43 am #1162468Hi,
Thanks for that, you are running the latest version already so we can’t really check anything right now. There is a new version coming out soon though, we can check for you then. Just let us know here in this thread.
Best regards,
RikardDecember 4, 2019 at 8:23 am #1162485An additional info would be important.
As long as you only have the two files style.css and functions.php (and a third one: screenshot.png for preview) in your child theme folder, then your presumption is correct. However, some have headers or footers or other files as modified files that are intentionally located in their child-theme. This was obviously done to add functionality to the source code of these files. These changes must then still be included in the new files.
I remember here a change of the header.php of the parent theme regarding the lightbox settings – so here those who had a header.php in the child theme had problems with their lightbox function after updating the parent theme. So if you have additional files in your Child-Theme folder you need to check if the parent-themes files have changed.
See for example: https://kriesi.at/support/topic/lightbox-doesnt-work-anymore-after-update/ etc. ppDecember 4, 2019 at 2:46 pm #1162619Hey,
Thanks for the info @guenni007!
In case you make modification on other files such as header.php etc., please consider adding comments so in case you need to update those files it would be easier for you to remember what exactly you modified :)Cheers!
YigitDecember 4, 2019 at 7:47 pm #1162709Okay, when the next update comes out, I’ll post again here.
December 21, 2019 at 8:45 pm #1168511Hello again.
You’d asked me to post back here when an Enfold update is available, so you can attempt to auto-update for me. I believe 4.6.4 is out now, so feel free to use the login info I provided to again try to auto-update.
Thanks!

I’ll come back and repost my message if needed, but right now I’m having some site maintenance done and can’t have anyone logging into my admin panel and making changes.
