Hi guys,
one of my customers-backend has got a php-memory-problem. I’m not any longer
able to open the start-page in the avia-editor. Here you can see the error-page
The text means: The website has technical difficulties. Please check the
website administrator’s email box for further instructions.
But unfortunately no mail is in my mail-box with further infos. ;-(So, I called my provider and he says that’s an php-memory-problem of the editor.
In that package the php-memory is 256 MB big. Here you can see the error-log
from my provider:
———————————————————————————————
[Wed Jul 17 13:40:27 2019] [php7:error] [pid 25710] [client 87.230.119.18] [host kindergartenfotograf.info] PHP Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 268435456 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 61440 bytes) in /is/htdocs/wp13302500_RC1SLFW264/www/fotografin/wp-includes/wp-db.php on line 1972
———————————————————————————————
I build a one-pager for my customer and with every new step (new content) the start-
page become slowlier and slowlier (only in the backend!). And now it seems that the
border is arrived. ;-/ So, what can/must I do now?Maybe you take a detail-look in the backend by yourself. The Login-Data you find below.
I’m really looking forward to your help! And sorry, it is a little bit urgent. ;-)Best regards

July 18, 2019 at 5:35 am #1119771Hey Carsten,
Would you be able to try to increase the PHP allocated to PHP further? If there is not enough memory then that is the solution: http://codex.wordpress.org/Editing_wp-config.php#Increasing_memory_allocated_to_PHP

RikardJuly 23, 2019 at 12:40 pm #1121179Hi Rikard,
thx for your answer and sorry for my late reply!
Unfortunately I’m not able to increase the PHP-Memory-Limit, because it is already
at 256 MB (as I has already written in my first post). In the meantime I’ve tried a few
things to solve the problem, also your tip but nothing helped. ;-(My provider-support thinks that the problem is the enfold-theme. Maybe the enfold-
theme needs to many rescources of the php-memory? Of course I have a lot of
content on the startpage, but is it really to much? At the moment I’m really helpless
and I hope you have an idea how the startpage can be saved.Again – with each new content the startpage became slower and slower and now you
can’t access the page anymore. Yes, I have a backup of the page but it is a little bit to
old and I would lost to many hours of work if I would rebuild. ;-/I hope you can help me.
With best regards

July 24, 2019 at 9:08 pm #1121732Hi,
It seems that the 256M memory limit is low and wordpress also requires a lot more, so not possible to increase it from server side?
Best regards,
BasilisJuly 24, 2019 at 10:22 pm #1121761Hi Basilis,
thx for your reply.
Unfortunately it is not possible to increase it from server side. All webhosting-packages
of my provider has this limit and normally it is enough. For a higher memory-limit my
customer would have to upgrade to a server-package. And at the moment this a little
too expensive for her. Are there really no other possibillitys? I really hope not! I never had
this problem before and sorry, for me the situation is a little bit strange. ;-/As I wrote – the error-page said, that I normally get a mail with instructions. But I didn’t
receive that mail. So, what are these instructions?Sorry, but the deadline of this site is very near, so I’m really under time-pressure. ;-/
I’m really looking forward to your new reply and help!Best regards
CarstenJuly 25, 2019 at 6:03 am #1121822Hi Carsten,
I think you have two options here;
1. Increase the memory allocated to PHP on the installation, that is the real solution to be honest with you. If the hosting plan doesn’t support that then maybe you could try looking for different hosting which will fit your needs?
2. Start removing content on the front page, this will likely free up memory. Also check for anything which is not absolutely needed on the site, like inactive plugins or plugins which are not really needed.
Best regards,
RikardJuly 26, 2019 at 8:22 pm #1122207Hi Rikard,
thx for your new reply.
First…It is nice that you be honest, but to be honest – that is what I expect basically
from a supporter! ;-)For the moment the upgrade of my customer webpackage is the “last“ option, so
first we have to look and hopefully find an alternative solution. As I said before
currently it is not possible to acces the page in the backend. So I’m not able to remove
things from it. And only one plugin is active (“hide my site“). And also if I deactivate
this too it doesn’t help. I think the last alternative option is to go directly into the database
and delete there. But this is a job for you because you’re the professional! Ok, can we do this?
Of course I’ve got a backup…from the whole site and of the database. Before you start with
that It would be nice if we can coordinate us which things will be deleted. My provider said that the enfold-theme is known as an “memory-consuming theme”. Would
you agree with that opinion? I mean the proof for that opinion is my current page-problem.
The question is: how many content is allowed on a normal enfold-page? I started to build my
one-pager with your demo “One Page Agency Demo”. Have I really so much more content
on my site than you on your demo-site? A plugin-problem is vastly improbable because at the
moment I have only one plugin active…as I said before…I really need answers to that questions because I have to explain that to my customer! Is the
page-length of an one-pager-layout always dependent on the php-memory-limit or are there
also other reasons? Which content is the “causer” on my startpage? Or is it the whole content? As I said before I use your “one-pager-demo”. After the installation I started with editing of course
on the startpage and I’m quiet sure that the page wasn’t slow and sluggish. So I really wonder
why my page got so slow and sluggish? It might there is another further problem, don’t you think so?For the moment up to here…it would be very nice if I hear soon from you…thx!
Best regards
CarstenJuly 30, 2019 at 12:40 am #1122985Hi Rikard,
short info – I have solved the problem by myself! When I look at the solution, I
wonder something that you didn’t think of. I cleaned up the database with
“wp-sweep” and then I immediately came back to the start page. In retrospect,
this had to be the logical conclusion, or don’t you think?Of course, you don’t always find the solution immediately, but I would have wished that
the “database cleanup” had at least appeared in your considerations. Well then. . .
hopefully next time. In any case, I have now learned that “cleaning up the database”
is very important! All right, let’s just forget about it and end well, all good, shall we? In the end, I am glad
that the problem was so easy to solve. But one thing hasn’t changed – the editing of the start page remains sluggish and tough!
Which leads me back to the question – how big is the memory-hunger of the Enfold theme?I also read a quite interesting documentary about the PHP memory topic.
It’s in german, but you can certainly translate it for yourself. There it is recommended
to upgrade to PHP 7. 3. . . have you already had some experience with it?Best regards

July 30, 2019 at 3:18 am #1123013Hi,
Thank you for the update.
But one thing hasn’t changed – the editing of the start page remains sluggish and tough!
What is the specs of your computer? Have you seen how the editor loads or performs on another computer — preferably a faster machine compare to the one you’re usually using? It’s quite normal for any page builder to slow down gradually when you insert additional content because it has to render and continually update those elements. This is not necessarily related to the PHP memory limit.
IMO, you’re home page is unnecessary long. You should consider limiting the home page for the most important content only or for those that has to be seen immediately and distribute all else to the sub pages.

IsmaelJuly 30, 2019 at 5:23 pm #1123196Hi Ismael,
thx for your reply!
I will try your suggestion very soon if I have the possibility to check it at a another pc.
But I can say that my “mac mini” is a quit good pc. He has 16 GB RAM and a fast
Samsung SSD. The Processor is an 2,6 GHz Intel Core i7. Ok, it’s not the newest one
but he’s still a very good computer. I’m looking forward to work with PHP 7.3. The
wp-info-page says that with it the work goes up 3 or 4 times faster. So, I’m very curios
to see it! What I definitely can say is that the other pages (of course with less content)
are not so sluggish. I repeat – only with the startpage I’ve got these problems.I really would like to know how many content is possible on one enfold-page? I know
it’s very difficult to say but maybe you have an vaguely estimate? Or is here only “try
and error” the way to find out? ;-/I know that the startpage is quiet long but it is still a “one-pager-layout”…so it is/have to
allowed too be a little bit longer than other sites. ;-) But I will talk with my customer to
reorganize the page in the very near future. Thx also for the link-tipps!In advance thank you for your new support…hope you’re all fine!
Best regards
CarstenAugust 1, 2019 at 10:13 am #1123823Hi,
Thank you for the info.
That’s a pretty good machine. We haven’t really tested how much content can be added before the editor becomes slow, mainly because we don’t see the need of adding that many content in any page. How regular do you update the page anyway? Our recommendation is to limit the content in any single page and try to optimize the images.

Have a nice day.

IsmaelAugust 4, 2019 at 8:48 pm #1124582Hi Ismael,
thx for your reply and sorry for my late.
Yeah, pretty good machine…right! I like it a lot! :-) Ok…I can understand your
argument because the most customers are building websites with less
content per page. At the moment I’m still in the draft-phase with the site. I
presume in the future I will update the site quarterly.Thank you for the link-tip…basically I know quiet good how I must optimize
images and I also know a few good plugins but you never stop learning, do you? :-)
And as I said before…I will talk to my customer.Thx again and have a good start in the new week.
Best regards
