My ‘vertical’ images – that is, images that are 1:3 aspect ratio (width:height) fail to resize in the masonry grid – they are 240px wide x 720px high. I have tried simple image sizes plugin and it claims to limit the masonry size to 240px x 240px but this is clearly not happening. The only way I can think of sorting this out is to put the images on a blank square and upload them then – but there must be a better solution without having to make them square, so is there some way of rectifyling this? The problem will also be present with a portrait format image I imagine eg one that is say, 240px wide by 360px high. I essentially need the image to be resized to 240px high with no cropping…

In the absence of any other information on this I have decided to just lay the vertical and portrait images on a square to make them ‘square’. This is not a perfect solution but it works.
I have found another post relating to this problem and the suggestion was that this was a wordpress issue rather than a flashlight problem – the solution was to completely reinstall wordpress with a windows version??? Sounded a bit dodgy to me and I wasnt game to risk the work Ive done in configuring various aspects of the current website..
Still would like an expert’s opinion on this though..

As long as the starting images are at least 240px wide you should have no issues with the portrait vs landscape. See the demo: http://kriesi.at/themes/flashlight/portfolio-item/masonry-portfolio-example-flexible/
You may just need to regenerate your images so that they properly take the themes thumbnail sizes using: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/regenerate-thumbnails/

Yes they are more than 240px wide yet still go too high in the masonry grid (like at least 700px). I might try simple image sizes to limit the vertical size. Would you know which image size in simple image sizes plugin the flexible masonry grid uses?

Hi – yes there is a 240px x 240px size for the masonry grid in simple image sizes….but my main problem is that my ‘vertical format’ images are 1:3 width:height, therefore the image expands to become 240px wide and 720px high (uncropped), way bigger than the images of other formats, so it looks odd. Not so bad for normal 2:3 portrait format photos, but terrible for ‘vertical panos’ like this…. Still looks like I’m going to have to put them on a square…

If the width is less than 240, it will expand to fit that and the height will expand proportionally as well. If that doesn’t look good to you then yes, the image on a square canvas is the best workaround for you.
