I don’t see any problem with using the SG Optimiser, but it will create problems if file compression is active in the theme. That functionality should be available in the plugin though, so it doesn’t really matter if it’s turned off in the theme.

I tried updating the portfolio item you linked to initially, and it worked as expected. When trying to remove the edit again, I’m seeing the same behaviour as your are describing. I’m seeing 403 forbidden errors on many resources when I inspect the page, but none seem to be theme related. Could you try reaching out to your hosting provider to check if they can see why the server is responding with 403 errors please?
